General description
2',3'-Dideoxyguanosine (ddG) is a nucleoside analog that is
used in the treatment of HIV-1 and hepatitis B infections. It inhibits the
enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which prevents the production of energy from
glucose, resulting in cell death. This drug has been shown to be effective
against human lymphocytes infected with HIV-1. ddG has also been shown to
inhibit splicing and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reverse transcriptase,
as well as being active against murine leukemia cells. The effective dose for
ddG is between 0.5 and 5 µM.
