General description
2',3'-Dideoxyinosine is a prodrug of didanosine. It is
converted to the active form, which inhibits HIV by blocking reverse
transcriptase. This drug has been shown to be effective in treating patients
with chronic HIV infection. 2',3'-Dideoxyinosine has also been shown to inhibit
the replication of other viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1 and
hepatitis B virus. The use of 2',3'-dideoxyinosine should be considered for
patients who are unable to tolerate or who have failed treatment with zidovudine.
2',3'-Dideoxyinosine is contraindicated in pregnant women or those who may
become pregnant because it can cause birth defects.
Didanosine (2',3'-Dideoxyinosine; ddI) is a a potent and
orally active dideoxynucleoside analogue, and also is a potent nucleoside
reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Didanosine shows antiretroviral activity for
HIV.
